Our Vision

SON Ministries’ Vision is to build our Hilliard community while offering a hand up (not a hand out) to families facing the unique challenges of poverty.

SON Ministries connects the community together in the Hilliard School District to be a place where:

  • No child experiences the hopelessness of hunger.
  • Families working their way out of poverty are connected to resources that will meet their basic needs, so hope is restored, families are stabilized, and community is built.
  • Local churches partner to demonstrate the Gospel through their service and relationships with people in need.
  • Community members join the movement by developing relationships across socio-economic, cultural, and religious barriers.

Since we began in 2007, God has revealed a vibrant community filled with citizens and leaders who care deeply about their neighbors.  A movement has begun within this community that is bigger than any building can contain. Serving Our Neighbors Ministries, with God’s blessing and provision, has become the catalyst for incubating more DREAMS we  work to alleviate poverty and build community.   At SON Ministries, we strive, together, for the BEST for our community.

Many individuals, businesses, schools, organizations, and churches in Hilliard and beyond have opened their hearts to join in our vision by offering free space, financial donations, in kind donations, volunteer hours, and resources. Working as a team we are Serving Our Neighbors and impacting the community.

Our Big Dream

SON Ministries’ visionis to honor what God is uniquely doing through this Ministry here in Hilliard by replicating in other suburban communities. We feel called to train, coach and teach others, specifically The Body of Christ, how to:

  • Mobilize their community (church members, teens and adults, businesses, schools and civic organizations) to love and“Serve Our Neighbors”
  • Address the unique needs of their community through a respect-filled, empowering HAND UP
  • Build partnerships to maximize impact
  • Build a loving community in Jesus’ name (build the Kingdom here on earth)

We will invite other suburban church members and ministries to come see and feelwhat we are doing here in Hilliard, to advance the Kingdom, and how we are doing it. The goal would be to inspire and equip others to return to their communities and take steps in faith to then LOVE and SERVEtheir Neighbors – especially the most vulnerable – in Jesus’ name!

Our History

It all began with a helping heart… March 3rd of 2007 Kim Emch (now SON Ministries Executive Director) prayed and asked the Holy Spirit to “light her heart on fire in a whole new way”. Eight days later she learned about how children who were in poverty were moving to the first ring suburbs and getting a free/reduced lunch in the school year but went without this lunch in the summer. She also learned that there was a program called the Summer Food Service Program that would allow her to receive a healthy lunch and give it to a child. For two weeks she was obsessed thinking…was this a problem where she lived? How many children were there in Hilliard experiencing this situation (where she worked, lived and where her children went to school)? She made calls and learned there were 2,158 children in Hilliard in poverty. Right then she knew the Body of Christ was being called to start a summer lunch program and that she was to champion it! God instantly lit her heart on fire for the children in need in Hilliard. As she began feeding these children and building relationships with families, many expressed other needs for tutoring, learning English, where to live, where to find jobs, childcare, and how to access specific resources. These requests paved the way for SON Ministries to offer year round programs as well as connecting families to community resources as initial steps on the road out of poverty. Today, SON Ministries continues its mission of serving and helping families out of poverty in Hilliard… The organization has emerged as the “connector” in the Hilliard area, connecting families in need with housing, tutoring, preschool, food, and literacy programs and HOPE for years to come.

And the journey continues

2007…The Hilliard Free Summer Lunch program was established as a way to provide a FREE nutritious breakfast, lunch and great programming for children in need within the Hilliard school District in the summer. In five years, SON Ministries grew from a loose idea to a faith-based nonprofit that has served, with the help of volunteers and the support of a dozen churches 26,862 lunches to more than 700 children at 5 different locations. 2008…Kid’s Club was established as an after school tutoring program as a parents shared their value of education but their inability to help with homework due to lack of English, lack of knowledge, illiteracy and work schedules. 225 children have received homework help and tutoring since the program began. 2009…SON Ministries was incorporated as a Christian 501c3 non-profit. Exactly TWO years after God answered the prayer and lit Kim’s heart on fire for the children in need in Hilliard! SON Ministries moves Kid’s Club to partner with Hilliard Reads Program located in the Hilliard United Methodist church where adults are taught English by Tolles Technical Center. This partnership increases the adult students from 55 to 121 in four months. 2010…SON Ministries founded and created the Hilliard Helps Resource System where they compiled and listed every program in the Hilliard area that helps families in need and put it in a free/accessible place. They introduced 60 community leaders to one another casting the vision of community collaboration to solve the biggest problems faced by local families. SON Ministries worked with churches, businesses and organizations that provide services to families in need to create this resource system. See www.HilliardHelps.org 2011…In one single summer, SON Ministries served 12,516 meals (lunch and breakfast) to 353 children from 197 families. For the first time, the program, representing 19 countries offered busing to 91 children. Programming was provided with the support of 375 volunteers. SON Ministries helps the Hilliard Reads program to change locations in order to accommodate the waiting list. 270 people are served – adults learning English, school aged children in Kid’s Club being helped with homework/tutored and babies being cared for. The parent advisory committee connects families and gives them leadership in shaping the programs of SON Ministries. SON, along with 61 partners connect families in need in the Hilliard School District with resources to help provide a brighter future. 2012…We continue take steps of eliminating poverty within our community… bringing HOPE and the feelings of being loved by our neighbors…now also offering a free legal clinic with a partnership with the Columbus Bar Association, reaching more families in need with our summer lunch program, expanding our year long educational programs for children, providing community education/literacy programs, and building more relationships while serving as a connector to resources with families requesting those needs… Ephesians 3:17b-22

And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, 18 may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, 19 and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.20 Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, 21 to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations,
