Help Serve the 1 in 4 children in Hilliard Facing Poverty
In 2005, suburban poverty outgrew urban poverty for the first time in the U.S. We have seen the number of children receiving a free or reduced school lunch in the Hilliard School District increase from 2,158 in 2006/7 to 3,793 in 2015/16.
Help Lift Families Up Toward Self-Sustaining Futures
By supporting SON Ministries you not only provide immediate needs for children and families (meals during the summer for hungry children, busing to and from lunch sites, coats for kids, referrals to food, and clothing pantries, and school supplies as well as Christmas gifts for families at reduced prices) , it also provides for programs and resources that lift children and families out of poverty:
o Recreational, entrepreneurial, and faith-based educational programming, for children attending the summer lunch program. (2016: 925 children attended, 10,978 were served)
o Academic support, recreational programming, and healthy snacks for children in Kid’s Club during the school year while their parents attend ESL (English as a Second Langauge classes; preparing children for the future and giving them hope for a life without poverty. (2015/16: 347 children were registered). Newly introduced early literacy elements as well for children ages 3 months through pre-K.
o Adult English classes, taught by trained ESL Teachers, for adults, with SON volunteers as classroom assistants and hospitality providers. (2015/16: 200 adults registered) There is always a wait list of more families wanting to register.
o Free Monthly legal clinics, in partnership with the Columbus Bar Association, helps those dealing with legal issues and cannot afford an attorney. (2015/16: 125 adults were connected)
o Job Readiness Modules in partnership with the Salvation Army for adult students in more advanced English classes (searching for meaningful work, filling out applications, interview do’s and don’ts)
o A Resource Guide, “Hilliard Helps,” (www. HilliardHelps.org) is maintained by SON Ministries. It contains the details of community programs that help Hilliard families in need. SON Ministries compiles and shares resources with the entire Hilliard community with the goal of equipping all community members to help connect families in need to services as they make their way out of poverty.
o In 2015/16: 193 families were served through our Coats for Kids program in which 504 coats were distributed and 617 children received Christmas gifts through the Good Tidings Christmas Store who would otherwise not receive them.

Because what we offer at SON Ministries is truly unique, and deeply needed in our community, we are a volunteer-based organization (445 volunteers last year) are always oversubscribed and working from a wait list, due to our own limited resources (financial resources and limited capacity). By intentionally bringing partners and large numbers of community volunteers together with families in need through our programming-we are building community one respect-filled relationship at a time, the SON Ministries way.
During 2015/16 we partnered with 13 churches, 41 businesses, 29 civic/social organizations, 16 schools, and 21 individuals in the community and beyond. Volunteers are the heart of our organization. We are most grateful for these partnerships!
